Before you file
- Form 16 from your employer, if you are salaried
- Your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS from the income tax portal
- Bank interest certificates and investment proofs
- Details of capital gains, rent or other income
Choosing the right ITR form
Most salaried individuals with straightforward income use ITR-1 (Sahaj). Capital gains, business income or foreign assets need other forms. A wrong form can make your return defective, so it is worth checking.
Old or new regime?
The new tax regime is now the default and has lower rates but fewer deductions. The old regime may still suit you if you claim large deductions. Compare both before filing.
Don't forget to e-verify
A return is not complete until it is verified. You can e-verify with Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a Digital Signature Certificate. Taxpayers who must have their accounts audited, and companies, file using a DSC.
